Every year, between May 1st and 5th, I wait to hear the first
Chuck-will's-widow calling out in the evening. His very
distinctive call cannot be mistaken for anything else. This year he was in one of the trees in the backyard and he called out all evening and into the night. I've have never been able to spot one of these elusive birds, but I know exactly when to start listening for their night time calls.
